From Sugar House, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this is Poker Night in America. (upbeat music) - Hello, and welcome to Poker Night in America. I'm Chris Hansen, alongside Joe Stapleton, bringing you cash-game action tonight. It's night number one at Sugar House, in Philadelphia. - Sugar House is also what the ladies call my bedroom. - Aww, because you're such a sweetheart?
- Nope, because of the inordinate amount of candy I keep on my nightstand. - Man, you are weird. I'm telling you, you're weird. - Well, you know what they say, "Better to be lucky, than weird." - That's not, that's not, no wait, forget it. Let's take a look around the table and check out the starting stacks. Two-thirds of the table has bought in for $10,000, while famed lawyer Linda Kenney Baden has bought in for 5k, and Dr. Gajan Jeganathan is in for 20k, as well as Mark Herm. - [Joe] A lawyer, a doctor, and the official state bird of Pennsylvania. Poker Night in America brought to you by Kimo Sabe Mezcal. - [Chris] 25 and 50 are the blinds, with an optional $100 straddle. This is attorney, Linda Kenney Baden. - [Joe] She's my favorite player at the table who's name sounds like a Supreme Court Justice and a South Park character combined. - [Chris] Mark Herm also has picked up a hand. - [Joe] I told you before, call me Hermie, or Big Herm. - [Chris] How about a Hermlicious no deposit bonus casino online? No? That doesn't work? - [Joe] It's a little too familiar for me. - [Chris] Action's on Joe McKeehen. - [Joe] Man, winning the World Series of Poker Main Event has not changed Joe a bit. And that is not a compliment. This is a massive raise from Herm. This isn't the kind of raise you make when you love your hand, I don't think. - That was a bad raise by me. That was some, that was not a good raise. - [Chris] Up to 3,700 with Ace-King. - Pretty sure I had the worst hand. - [Joe] Herm seems like he's really concerned about getting bluffed here. Even if Joe's blasting off with three-four, Ace-Jack's not that big of a favorite. - You go hard in cash too, huh? - What? - You go hard in cash too, huh? I have it. I'm not bluffing. - [Herm] Nice hand. - [McKeehen] Thanks. So you're not confused. - [Chris] With that hoodie on, Joe McKeehen kind of looks like if, you could cross Dennis the Menace with Bill Belichick. It's just not a good look for Joe, but then again, that's his regular look. - [Joe] And the Venn Diagram of people who are gonna get that reference is thin as always, Chris Hansen. - [McKeehen] Smell that heavy smoke? - What's up? - [McKeehen] Smell that heavy smoke? - No, why, are there people smoking there? - [McKeehen] I sure hope not. - Well obviously, not in the poker room. - Just smells like smoke. Am I not the only one? Does it smell like smoke? Smells like smoke for me. - [Joe] Yeah, Chris just smells like smoke. It's Philly, it's the natural aroma. - [McKeehen] You smell that smoke? - [McKeehen] Can you do anything about that? - [Chris] Flop's king high. Couple of hearts on board. - Yeah, it does smell like smoke. - [Joe] Doesn't Jeganathan sound like the world's worst celebrity couple mashup name? - [Chris] Matt Glantz bets 600. - [Joe] Glantz out of position so he was looking to play with the betting lead. Maybe they smell smoke because the poker action is hot, hot, hot here at Sugar House. Also, so hot maybe we should be leaving in an early fashion? - [Chris] No. - [Joe] No? Just me? - [Chris] The turn is a three of clubs and now Jeganathan has a flush draw. - 17. - [McKeehen] I say I can't breathe a lot but now I'm serious. (laughs) - [Chris] But Glantz continuing to bet into him. - [Joe] Ace-10 was the best hand, still is the best hand. Glantz is doing a great job of telling a consistent story though. - [Chris] Jegenathan sniffs that one out, puts out a raise, and that makes Matt Glantz go goodbye. - That was the hardest I think you ever tried in this game. - [Glantz] What's that? - That was the hardest I think you ever tried in this game. (laughs) - [Joe] Nice try, Matt Glantz. Matt Glantz, one of the best triers in the game. - We drove up from Maryland to Atlantic City and there was a car on fire. - [Joe] Car on fire? Are the Eagles having that good of a season? - I don't know, we just did, we didn't believe, but like what are you talking about, car's don't just go on fire. - I'm trying to remember the story, but basically, it was just him saying that cars catch fire all the time. Insisting. It went on for like two hours, this conversation. Cars would catch fire. He sees them every day. No, no. He just says he sees it every day. - [Joe] Again, this is another huge raise from Herm. - You could see cars catch fire on the side of the road, and it's like a daily occurrence, so that was just, it's just always a joke that everyone makes fun of him for. How did you find out about that? - With that Twitter thing. - But you tweeted about it though. - Yeah, but I got it from that. - That's just a Billy thing. You hang out with Billy? - No, I saw him at Whole Foods and he didn't say hello to me. (laughs) - What's going on here, man? - Raise, raise. - [Dealer] He's gonna raise. - Oh my god, I'm gonna have to fold the best hand. - [Joe] Turning Jack-10 into a bluff. I don't hate it. Ace-Queen is typically only gonna get this much action on hands that have it crushed, but this guy may have just put the word fish in Fishberg. - [Chris] All the cookies are all in the oven. Herm is all-in. Action back on Fishberg. 6,600 to call. That'd be for the rest of the chips. - Oh my gosh. - [Joe] Looks like we have hit Herminal velocity. - So, Fishberg puts in 54 big blinds pre with Jack-10 off, but then folds. - I've made a huge mistake. - Stay tuned. We'll be back in a moment, just as soon as we put out the fire in Fishberg's stack. Sorry Greg, we love ya. - I'm with Kelly Winterhalter here, in kind of the Kimo Sabe Mezcal area, the trusted friends area, and she smashed me up a little bit at poker. I didn't like that very much. (laughs demurely) But how did you find poker? I mean, you have some skills. - [Kelly] I really just showed up on a whim. I was a bored on a Friday night. I came in to play. I played 3/6 limit for the first time. - [Phil] How many years ago? - Two years ago. I was instantly intrigued by the game, I think within the first week of playing recreationally. I picked up a poker book. It felt like the game was just very compatible with the way my mind worked already. And I just fell in love with it. - Cheers to you. - Cheers. - With a Kimo Sabe Mezcal. Trusted friends. - Trusted friends. - I knew when I was like six years old. My family was like, "What are you doing when you grow up?" "I'm gonna own a casino." So, I just always felt like I had a gambling mentality. That's kind of how I ended up here. - Welcome back to Poker Night in America. - Let's get back to the pokers. - [Chris] McKeehan's back in the straddle. - [Joe] Did we force him to straddle, because poker players are basically slaves you know? - Chris, I'm gonna take 2K off, okay? - [Chris] Glantz bumps it up to 300. - [Joe] Getting a little loose with King-Ten. - [Chris] Kenney Baden calls. - [Joe] Action on Herm, the Herminator, hates entering a pot for less than a grand. "I'll be stacked." - [Brunson] And that would be worth it. I'd limit my losses. - [McKeehen] Is that what you're telling me to do? - [Brunson] Huh? - [McKeehen] Is that what you're telling me to do? - [Brunson] No, I said I was gonna do it. - [Chris] And there it is. He brings it up to 1,150. - [Joe] Gotta wonder if Glantz knows what a live wire this guy is. Looks like he does. Glantz is in position. Technically he's behind. - [Chris] He folds, and so let's see if Kenney Baden wants to see a flop with her sevens. - [Joe] This is a lot to call for in a flop where you're very likely to hate the flop no matter what it is. "All right, I'll see a flop, I'll see a flop!" - [Chris] 2,700 in the pot as we go to the flop. And look at that. A set of sevens for Kenney Baden. - [Joe] Okay well whatever Linda, way to make me look like a jerk. (laughs) - [Chris] Bottom pair for Herm. - [Joe] And his guy's going to cause his stack some serious herm. - [Chris] Is he hemorrhaging chips right now? - [Joe] He could very well be hemorrhaging. Hope he has a sense of humor about it. Linda doesn't have the nuts but against guys as live as this one, you're more than happy to get all the chips in. - [Chris] Turn is a jack. Let me ask you this Stapes, who do think is gonna win, her or Herm? Now Linda fires out 1,300. Takes over the betting. Oh. How 'bout that? - [Joe] Howbow dah? - [Chris] How 'bout that? Cash me outside. All-in, Linda. Here we go. - [Joe] You know, the more crooked Herm's hat is, the more out-of-line he plays. It's his Oreo. - [Chris] Linda calls. You might as well put 'em all in the middle. Where's he going at this point, with what you've got left in front of you? 8,500 in the pot as we go to the river. Oh boy. Ace on the river gives Herm two pair. Linda's about to get paid off. - [Joe] But she checks. - [Chris] Here comes the bad news. (laughs) - [Joe] Is it okay to laugh? I'd be probably laughing at this guy. - [Chris] A chuckle, not full laugh. Just chuckle. - [Joe] Na-ha!

Hello and welcome back to the Most Amazing Top 10 Channel on the Internet! I am your host Rebecca Felgate and today I am talking all about the Top 10 Scary Las Vegas Urban Legends. I just went to Vegas in December and it is a pretty intense place to be! I got drunk in Paris then found myself sitting among flamingos, then hopped down the road to find myself in a medieval castle…. Only in Vegas!
Have you ever been to Las Vegas? 10 - The Ghosts of Bally's Casino and the MGM Fire What is now Bally’s Las Vegas used to be the MGM Grand when fire tore through the building in November 1980. The incident today is the second worst disaster in Nevada History and the third worst hotel fire in modern US history. During the time of the fire, there were 5,000 people in the hotel and no sprinklers in place across a large part of the building. The fire started in the Deli restaurant and tore through the second floor. 85 people died, the majority from smoke inhalation, and 588 civilians, 25 employees and 14 firefighters were injured. The hotel was bought by Caesars Entertainment Corporation and turned into Bally’s in 1986. People that stay at the hotel are convinced that they hear screaming or ghostly apparitions walking through walls. Some employees have reported seeing a group of ghosts who hang around together…which is kind of sweet. 9 - Stephen Paddock Was in a Cult Or so local rumour has it. We can all agree that Stephen Paddock, the Las Vegas Shooter, was a disturbed man, but was he part of a satanic cult. On October 1st 2017, Stephen Paddock broke a window in his 32nd floor room at the Mandalay Bay hotel and fired on a crowd enjoying the route 91 Harvest music festival. Using semi automatic rifles, he fired 1,100 rounds, killing 58 people and injuring a further 851. According to a number of news publications, including the National Enquirer, Paddock was a prime target for a cult which encouraged him to carry out the murder spree. Dr George Simon, a psychologist and author said that Paddock’s flaws, including his drinking and his gambling, made him easy pickings for a cult leader who was able to encourage him to do his bidding. 8 - The Rotting Corpse Under Bed Oh, this is a very popular urban legend, appropriated to many many many hotels in local folklores all over the country…and actually, at times, all over the world. It seems that the original story can be traced back to Sin City, though! Basically, the story goes that a person checks into a hotel…a budget hotel, you know…so they can save their cash for gambling! They check in, pop their bags down and have a rest. They notice a faint smell, but think nothing of it. They go out for dinner, come back ready for bed and the smell is a bit worse. They’re really tired and there is no one at the front desk so they suck it up and go to bed. They wake up in the night and the stench is bad. Really bad. They turn the lights on and check to find the source of the stink. They look everywhere, especially around the bed as that is where it seems the strongest. Eventually they decided to lift up the bed…and loh and behold…there is a festering corpse under there. That is round about the time the knocking at their door starts…. Freaked out, they climb out of their bedroom window, get in their car leaving their stuff behind and they hot foot it out of there. 7- The Ghosts of Circus Circus I just went to Vegas over Christmas and I went into Circus Circus because of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas… you know that scene where they get the fear and can’t get off the carousel. It’s a classic. Well apparently that moving bar on the merry go round isn’t there anymore, which is sad. Also not there anymore is room 123. Well… the room still exists, it just has a different number, making it impossible to tell which room this homicide happened in. Oh, yeah…. Homicide. A woman shot her two children and her sons. Before the room was renovated, people would see the faint words, help me, written on the bathroom mirror. Cries for help can still be heard in the poker rooms, which are rumoured to have been nearby. Some also claim rooms 230 and 576 are haunted. 6- 4th Grader Ghost at Edwards Elementary School Can you even imagine being brought up in Vegas? Insane Edwards Elementary School is located to the east of the city and has one student who has been in attendance for nearly 30 years. Students in Grade Four and Teachers of the fourth grade have reported seeing a young girl dressed in white. She is often spotted in the computer room and room 26, her old classroom. It seems that the young girl is a deceased student who once attended the school, but died in 1990 when she was in the fourth grade. This is seemingly why only fourth grade students and teachers can see the girl, but no other years can. Another Vegas School Haunting, this time in a Middle school, at number ** we have the Janitor of Dell H Robinson. This is a very strange tale indeed and seems to effect only students who have moved to the school from outside of Nevada. Again, just east of the City is Dell H. Robinson Junior High…it isn’t too far from Edwards Elementary…kids could in theory hit both schools if they were unlucky…or just loved ghosts. The ghost at Dell H is nothing like the benevolent child at Edwards, though! The ghost here is of a janitor who is seen walking the halls with bloody hands. Again, seemingly only kids from out of state experience this ghostly apparition! How weird! Some new arrivals also report seeing him in their dreams after enrolling at the school. Stranger still, according to local legend, he disappears from sight and mind as soon as the pupil starts going to church. Riiiiight. Sure. 5 - La Palazza Mansion Demonic Hauntings La Palazza Mansion is located at 1700 Bannie Avenue in Las Vegas, just up from the main strip. Despite being prime real estate, the house has laid empty for a number of years. The property was purportedly formerly owned by Mobsters . These days the mansion is said to be not just a little haunted, but very haunted. The previous owner thought he had brought his dream home but was freaked out when bad things started happening there. In the end, he decided to challenge the poltergeist – demanding it leave. This didn’t go down well, the man was then nearly choked to death as an invisible entity grabbed him by the neck. His friends managed to pull him away. It seems the mobster former tenants had left some unfinished business in the house. The house was featured on Ghost Adventures in 2010. Also, I found a website where members of the public can leave comments and a number of people living in the area said that they had visited the house as a potential buyer or a trespasser who heard the urban legends. All agree that the house felt very cold despite the 100 degree heat outside. 4 - Area 51 We couldn’t do a Vegas list without talking about the nearby Area 51. Sure, the mysterious military location is not actually in Vegas, but it is tantalisingly close by. Area 51 is a highly classified United States Air Force facility that was once dubbed Paradise Ranch as a code name for the restricted base. The mysterious location has frequently been linked to UFO conspiracy theories, including the Roswell incident of 1947. In the 1980s, Rob Lazar told a Vegas Tv station that he worked at the centre to reverse engineer crashed flying saucers. As recently as March 2018, a couple spotted mysterious lights in the sky near the area. While aliens are the most popular urban legend here, some people say this is where filming of the moon landing actually took place. Whatever the test centre is used for, the fact that it strictly does not allow public visitors, along with its vigilant security control suggests that there is more than meets the eye at this facility. Could UFOs be bopping on over from Area 51 to the outskirts of vegas? Find out more at number: 3 So Joshua Warren, a Paranormal Investigator claims that there is a time warp outside of Vegas. Warren said the warp occurs between the I-15 and Route 93. He measured this with a Differential time rate meter, a device used by UFO researchers that detects bends in the space time continuum, and the laws of physics we know our earth usually observes. The discrepancy in time measurement has led to paranormalists suggesting that there is a wormhole or black hole in the area….so ….you know…watch out. 2 - Bodies in the Hoover Dam Cement Arhh…I visited the Hoover Dam on my way in to Vegas over Christmas. The Hoover Dam sits on the Colorado River and divides Arizona with Nevada. Crossing this river is pretty much the gateway to Vegas and the water from the dam provides millions of Americans with clean water, especially those living in Vegas. Nonetheless, the Dam has a dark history, and is often referred to as the Hoover Damned or the tomb of the damned. Built in Depression era USA, the official number of people who died while building the dam is 96, although many more were thought to have perished. That is the fact, the urban legend says that the majority of these people are encased in the concrete walls of the dam. Supposedly, the mixer couldn’t stop pouring concrete as it would mean a structural issue with the end result, so the bodies were just covered over and make up part of the vast wall today. This is probably just an urban legend, but a lot of people did sacrifice their lives for this structure. Some even say their lost souls can be seen walking across the bridge between states at night. 1 - Egyptian Curse on the Luxor Never mess with ancient Egyptians! The Luxor hotel is an Egyptian themed hotel on the Vegas strip, but it seems like the old Gods aren’t that on board with it. The Luxor has had a very consistently high death rate over the years since it opened in 1993 as well as a string of misfortune that has followed it. Some say 7 people died while building the vast hotel, and some of them were seen in the boats on the replica river Nile that meandered through the lobby. In 1996 a woman jumped from the 26th floor of the building and now haunts the floor. Another man died when he drunkenly fell from the 10th floor into the lobby. A hand bomb went off in the parking garage in 2007, killing an employee, in 2010 a UNLV football player dropped dead following a fight and in 2012, a Casino employee was murdered by her boyfriend in the Lobby. 2012 was also a bad year for the hotels rep as three guests caught legionnaires disease – with further cases reported in 2017. One of the guests even died as a result. All in all, it is rumoured that the hotel is cursed. Why? Well, they didn’t appease the Old Gods when building the site, especially in the placement of the Sphinx, which is facing East rather than West and in the building of the Pyramid, which doesn’t have the required eye at the top. So that was the Top 10 Scary last Vegas Urban Legends! Which of these terrifies you the most? Let me know in the comments section down below. Comments from my recent video, The top 10 scary Slenderman Urban Legends Part 2 Jake Nicholson Said: Everyone needs to back off on Slenderman. I think he is just misunderstood. Has anyone ever just asked Slenderman how he is doing or if he just needs a hug. Everyone is to quick to judge.? Nooo… no, we’re talking about SLENDER man, not Slenderman….slenderman is a great guy. Slender man…. Total killer! Person on the Internet Said: Slenderman the man with no face the man with no soul the man who...is taller than me? Mate – everyone on this earth is taller than me! Venetian Casino right there Studio City is where we are right now We're going to walk down the Cotai Strip You can see that little MGM guy We're going to go down the Strip I don't know what they are doing? I guess a photo. Taking photos too. I guess everyone is taking photos here.
Studio City They are doing a selfie photo there We're going to try to get across this red light We're going to go down this strip and see what we see tonight. We're going to go into the Lobby of a few of these casinos I was just inside Studio City, but it is completely empty right now. This is also the weekend of the Macau Grand Prix I want to see if... I want to see if the Grand Prix brings out a lot more people or not So we'll see... We're going to go into the Parisian in a second I want to walk through all of this though, because there is always people outside too Let's see what people are doing. Christmas Tree. Selfie. There's the Parisian We're just going to walk Christmas We're going to through the middle here, and then cut across A lot of people doing selfies here For this right here They have put out the Christmas lights now We're going to keep walking straight, then take a left into the casinos, and then come back out again I thought there would be a lot more people. Tonight is a Saturday night with the Grand Prix this weekend I would have thought a lot of people (tourists) would be down in this area But I guess not A lot of people in this area These people look like they were here for the Grand Prix Let's see I'll walk through here real quick Who knows what's going on here I can take a guess though. We're just going to walk back through I guess these are hooker here Those girls are, and those girls are We're going to keep going through here We're going to head on up to the... Parisian Lobby And see what we see There's the casino there This is the whole strip right here That's the Venetian over there This is the Parisian here So we're just going to go into the front lobby And come back out again Actually there are a lot more casinos in the city, but this is the Cotai Strip So when I first moved here, this casino didn't exist I moved here 6 years ago I think this came about...right now it is 2018 Maybe around 2015 or 2016 I remember they were building in this big area Let's see if we can get in here This right here...this is... A mimic of something in Paris It's quiet here too. There is not a lot going on at the moment I guess there are a lot of people inside the casino though It makes sense, I guess In the daytime it is a lot more crowded I guess they are inside the casinos now We're just going to go around the circle here Going in a circular pattern so we don't miss anything So if you are watching this on YouTube, you can get a sense of the Cotai Strip I thought it would be busier on a Saturday night I usually don't come here, especially on a Saturday night Usually I would come here in the daytime And it is usually quite busy Anyway, we are going to keep walking Over there used to be Hard Rock Cafe which is now gone Parisian is new. The Sands has been here It's been here the entire six years that I have been here Venetian has been here the full six years that I've been here I guess when I first came here, it had recently opened I don't know the exact dates, but I think it was 2012 I came in 2013 To Macau And I've been living here ever since If YouTube ever takes a following, I've been in Asia since 1996 I spent quite a few years in South Korea And quite a few years in Japan Quite a few meaning that I was in and out of Korea for 12 years And I was in Japan straight for six years And in that time that I was in and out of Korea... I was in Europe. Brazil. I'm not sure what that is all about. I see that quite a bit. I guess I do know what it is about. But I don't know where they meet them. Might just meet them on the street, I'm not sure. It's hard to know who is who at times Who is a tourist and who is not I guess sometimes it is quite clear, but Usually I don't come here at all on a Saturday though If you live in Macau, you don't go to this Cotai Strip Cotai Strip There are other bars that locals go That guy. That one looks like a guy. Everybody is exchanging their numbers here A busy street There's the Venetian Let's see. We're going to keep going See what else is going on There are a lot of people working the Strip I guess they are working the tourists If you are local, we go into... Taipa or Macau They look like ladyboys, I think The girl had really long arms and butt implants Anyway, we are going to keep walking The locals always go to... Taipa, there are some bars and on the Macau side, there are some bars too There isn't a lot in Macau Not like Hong Kong So, if you really want to go out, you'd go to Hong Kong in a hearbeat Zhuhai isn't too far away It's just across the border. You can walk across it with your passport That's an even bigger city than Macau They got stuff going on there too Macau at night, there is more....well, there are all kinds...but But you can hangout with some Portuguese, or Macaunese, or... or definitely Chinese and expats. Mostly.... Brits, and Aussies, and Americans Some of them are casino workers There is the Sands over there I used to teach English in Korea for...quite a while And when I was in Korea, almost all of the expats are... They are all either... English teachers or American military Or American military contractors So, anybody that I met... Well, my hair was never short military style...but Whenever I knew other English teachers who... hair was like that way They usually...well, they could get stopped by the Military Police MPs - Military Police Anyway, Korea had a completely different scene So everywhere you go, there is a different scene I've also visited unusual places like Madagascar And you have more security people and different types Here you get a lot of casino workers Some of them are also into construction And there are also Grand Prix people too So I've also met people who were involved with the Grand Prix What's going on here? Just tourists? What is that? It looks like....? I don't know what that is I guess they are tourists...but she... She's dressed in a certain way that looks It's hard to really know Let's see So okay. Here. Take a look at that clock up there Can you see those little people? I don't know if you can see it in this camera or not They always look like they are... cleaning up there So I remember when they first put it up there. It was on New Year's Eve So I thought people were preparing for New Years Eve But now I can see it is just permanently there, so... That used to be where Hard Rock Cafe used to be There's a Rolls Royce I'll see if I can get....yeap, it's a Rolls Royce right there Let's see Yeah, Rolls Royce There are a bunch of them parked up there - Rolls Royces So they go and pick up people I guess Okay, City of Dreams It's been here the whole time that I've been here We're going to walk into Venetian in a minute We might even walk through it We're actually getting near the end of the Cotai Strip If you go inside of these places, for example, the Sands... they have malls Some locals will go there. Venetian too. Venetian has the malls that the locals will go to Because they have different stuff in here So the casinos kind of take the place of malls Actually they used to have a lot of venue stuff going on here (out front the Venetian) You can see Christmas lights here I haven't seen so many events recently We're going to walk straight up this way A Winter in Venice Alright So they used to have more gondola rides stuff here and winter stuff. But, I guess... Maybe more days there are more casinos. Like six years ago, the Parisian The Venetian would have been one of the main ones But Parisian, with the Eiffel Tower, is actually new It's actually almost the same - Venetian & Parisian That has the French theme, and this has the Italian theme Venice theme. The Paris theme. It's pretty quiet This used to have events all of the time Sometimes you'd have live music. But, I don't know now. Not much is going on here anymore Anyway Let's walk in and see if there is anything going on If not, I'm going to head home Okay It is livelier in here I'm surprised. I thought more would be going on in this area So, I think what I'm going to do is.... I'll just walk through this casino with the camera and I'm just going to walk home Call it a night So we are going up the back way here I don't know. There is some strange lighting when I look into the camera here I'm not a single person, so I can't do things I can't do single things. But I think if I were a single person... I don't know what Macau would be like A lot of tourists come through all of the time They come from Japan, from Korea A lot of mainlanders from China A lot of Filipinos everywhere. So it is an interesting place. And they usually come and go to the casinos and they go to Hong Kong Make a little road trip A lot of people from Hong Kong come over here all the time too A lot of Mainlanders from Mainland China Alright We're going to... It looks empty They look like they are from Hong Kong on the Grand Prix weekend All dressed up I don't know if they are dressed up to go to the casinos.... There are also some nightclubs in the casinos At this time of night...maybe it is a little early still though I don't have a watch with me I don't have my cellphone with me either I think it is probably 10:30pm Feels like it because a lot of things are closed One thing there is no shortage of is jewelry shops I'll keep walking We're going walk through it...and then get to the other side, and go home I guess to make this interesting, I will share more... I've been...ahm...well, everywhere has a different expat scene Some of the bars around here, they'll have a lot of... casinos workers We can actually walk by there It's not too far from here It's not quite on my way home, but... It'll give you a feel for what Macau is like Here's a food court Chiang Mai, Thailand Food court is actually... There are not many people here Usually this place used to be 100% packed Packed with people Singapore. Pizza Pizza You can actually drink beer here too People drink beer in here Taiwanese or Vietnamese Let's walk across Usually in the daytime, you cannot get a seat in here Usually I'm walking around here with my tray, looking for any open seat Somewhere to sit. But tonight, you wouldn't need to do that Pretty boring though Have to film here when it is super crowded I might not buy anything Ah, I'm just going to go home I have this new camera - GoPro7 And it has a strap that I am resting it on my shoulder Christmas tree. But it's just kind of dead right now Not a whole lot going on I'm trying to get my YouTube Channel going a little bit There is the casino floor right there I'm not supposed to film this. But every tourist you see takes this elevator with their camera on. Filming everything I don't know This is Macau on a Saturday Sometimes...There is an ATM machine over that I sometimes use Actually, these guys look like they are trying to ask people stuff... I don't know what this is all about Security? Security guys That's weird the way they were acting Anyway, there is an ATM machine over there I use that ATM machine every once in a while Sometimes there will be people who will come up asking you questions while you are withdrawing money Saying stuff in Chinese It is suspicious if they are doing that while you are using the ATM But, generally, in Macau, there is almost no crime But occasionally you'll get something suspiciousness like that. I like the ones where they walk around Richard's World Traveler. Did you know that there are more than 3,600 colleges and universities and more than 35,100 high schools in the United States? That means that every year, academic institutions are competing for admissions at high volumes. universities and colleges often do so by promoting themselves as how they compare to other schools, instead of focusing on what really sets them apart. The problem is, with everyone utilizing this same strategy, those prospective students don’t really know who to believe, and as a result, sometimes overlook the marketing strategy altogether.
Having said this, many high schools Focusing on promoting “more” ends up failing schools instead of helping them, because instead of focusing on differentiating yourself as an academic institution, you are simply providing your prospective audience with information that they don’t need. As discussed in last week’s blog entry, “Frequency and Personalization When Marketing To Prospective Students,” when marketing to prospective students, it’s important to remember to see them as an individual instead of just another number. Marketing to your prospective students with personalization not only makes them feel like you are speaking directly to them, but helps to achieve better admissions results as well. Robert Sevier of University Business Magazine states Rather than “more,” consider an understanding of strategy that focuses on the idea of “different.” In this view, the purpose of strategy is to differentiate yourself from your competitors in ways that target audiences will value.” In order to differentiate yourselves, utilize what you already know about personalized marketing techniques, and capitalize on the use of personalized URLs (PURLs) to directly target your prospective students. Keep in mind that prospective students only want material and information that applies to them, so the use of PURLs and direct personalization is essential and will be sure to provide you a standout return in measurable results. Setting yourself up to be the key provider of this information will get you farther with your prospective students. In addition, follow these summarized tips provided by Sevier to guarantee that your school stands out amongst its competitors: When your competitors zig, you must zag. Offer something your competitor does not and be great at what it is that you provide in regards to academia. Differentiate yourself with the notion of value. Make your differentiation applicable to your prospects. If it’s not, they won’t notice your efforts, and you will surely be overlooked. Know your competitors. Knowing what you’re up against can only work in your favor. Be armed with a wealth of information so that you can be sure to provide your prospective students with as much differentiation as you can when competing for admissions. Follow these suggested tips on how in combination with the utilization of personalized marketing techniques and you will be sure to provide your prospects with a clear sense of how your school supersedes its competitors. Recently, I was talking to a friend of mine who has decided to go back to school to be able to further his career. He told me about how difficult it was to find a school in the area where he lives (in a small town north of Cincinnati) that was able to fit classes around his work schedule and still offer the courses. He needs to find tutors to teach him how to write an essay in the time frame he prefers. This got me to thinking, is he alone when it comes to the pains of being a non-traditional student, or is this a problem for many others too?
Meeting the demands of non-traditional students is becoming a bigger trend now more than ever. According to Daniel Fusch of Director of Publications and Research at Academic Impressions.com, “three-fourths of today’s college students are nontraditional, 49 percent are enrolled part-time, 38 percent work full-time and 27 percent have dependents of their own at home.” This is an extremely large percentage and is continuing to grow. What this also means is that the demand for higher education is becoming much more prevalent, and as a result, marketing techniques are changing to target this specific demographic. Fusch goes on to explain, “For many traditional students, the campus experience and the process of gaining education is an event, a rite of passage. For adult learners, it is more likely a step into getting something else—a better degree, a better job.” Many adult learners are looking to better themselves in order to obtain something to help provide for themselves and their family, and marketing needs to convey exactly that. When marketing to non-traditional students, I’ve found through conversations with peers and a bit of my own research, that it is important to focus on a few key factors : Flexibility: Being able to offer required classes at a time that works with your non-traditional students is a definite selling-point. When marketing, make sure that the ability to work with their schedules and busy lives is a priority. Not only will this attract them to want to learn more about your university, but it will convey to them that you take into consideration their ultimate goals and obstacles, and will help to build a strong relationship that will only help your reputation as a university. Acceleration: For adult learners, as Fusch previously mentioned, the desire to obtain higher education is to achieve something greater so that they may be capable of obtaining a better job or just further their degree for their own personal fulfillment. Marketing to non-traditional prospects by focusing on the speed in which you can obtain your degree is a major draw for these prospects, as many of them want to be sure that they can complete their programs in as short amount of time as possible. Capitalize on what you have to offer: Whether it be financial aid, transfer credit evaluation, online programs, help from an advisor, or amenities such as child care, capitalizing on the extras that your university has to offer adult students is the one of the best ways to market your university and provide them with the tools that they need to succeed. Focus on these suggested factors when marketing to your non-traditional prospects and you will be sure to receive a high return in fulfilling both your admissions goals, and the success of your students. It is commonly known that in order to remember something, we must see it repeated multiple times before we are able to commit it to memory.
That same ideal goes for anything- whether it be memorizing math facts, learning a new language, or being able to recall a catchy marketing jingle. Therefore, you can only imagine that as students are being flooded with mailers, emails, phone calls and information packets on a daily basis throughout their already busy school year that it would take a lot more than just one attempt to really resonate with your prospective student audience. 19th Century author Thomas Smith wrote a guide titled “Successful Advertising” where he said that it takes 20 concrete touches to capture the attention of your audience. While 20 may seem like a large number, the reality is that in order to stay fresh in the minds of your prospective students, you must make it clearly known to them that you want them to be a part of your school and that you have a multitude of things to offer them. In order to ensure you are marketing to your prospective students effectively, communicate with them from multiple mediums. Social media, internet advertising and email are essential when dealing with the teenage demographic, as many of them would rather communicate via internet instead of receiving generic direct mail pieces. However, if you do decide to go the direct mail route, be sure to hone in on the aspect of personalization. Personalization can be the single deciding factor that determines whether or not you catch the attention of a prospective student. Not only will this catch the attention of your prospect and maximize your results, but it will help to build a relationship with your target audience as well. Through the use of personalized URLs (PURLS) as your call to action, you can gather specific interests of your prospective students and get a better understanding for what it is they are looking for in a school. Your marketing can then better address their needs, supplying you with a higher return on quality admissions. Utilizing different and memorable avenues of communication, such as PURLs and social media, will not only stick with your prospects, but will create measurable results for you as well. Whatever your communication route may be, Remember the importance of personalization when targeting prospective students for the upcoming academic year. It may take you twenty times to make an impression, but the successful return and relationships you build with your prospective student audience along the way will be worth your efforts. |
